La Pepica

The most famous beach restaurant in Valencia, on the Paseo Neptuno facing the Malvarrosa, in continuous operation since 1898. The standard order is paella valenciana (chicken, rabbit, snails, green beans) or paella de marisco (seafood) at lunch, cooked over wood, served in the pan with a wooden spoon.

It is large, busy, touristy in the most obvious sense, and still — when the paella arrives — undeniably good. Other beach restaurants along the same promenade (La Marcelina, La Rosa) are at least as authentic and often quieter. Reserve for weekend lunch.

A story
Hemingway's Death in the Afternoon namechecks La Pepica as the best place to eat paella in Valencia, and he was a regular when in town for the bullfights. The walls still hold his framed letter and a long gallery of subsequent celebrity photos — Orson Welles, Sofía Loren, every Spanish prime minister of the 20th century.
