Plaza del Ayuntamiento

Valencia's grand civic square is a wedge-shaped open space ringed by some of the city's most monumental Modernista and Beaux-Arts buildings — the City Hall (Ajuntament) on the south side, the Central Post Office (Correos) with its glassed-in courtyard opposite, and the El Corte Inglés flagship across the western edge. The fountain and flower stalls fill the middle.

It is the heart of civic life and the focal point for celebrations, demonstrations, and especially the daily Mascletà fireworks of the Fallas festival in March. On any normal day it's a useful crossroads — half the bus routes start or end here.

A story
Every day from 1 to 19 March during the Fallas festival, this square hosts La Mascletà at 2pm sharp — a five-minute rhythmic gunpowder symphony fired from the pavement that you hear with your sternum. The square is closed off; the crowd of 100,000 packs in tight; the percussive end leaves your ears ringing for an hour.
