Sveafallen

Ancient dried-up rapids — dramatic rock channels carved by a long-vanished river

Sveafallen is the geological curiosity that makes Degerfors worth a stop. The site preserves the dramatic landscape of ancient rapids — deep rock channels, carved basins, and stepped gorges — left behind when the river changed course thousands of years ago and the water simply stopped. The scale of the carving gives a strong sense of the force that once flowed here.

The terrain is accessible on foot and good for scrambling on the smoother rock surfaces. There are also some established rock climbing routes on the faces above the gorges. The site is just outside the town center and easily reached on foot. It takes an hour or two to explore properly, and the contrast between the quiet forested surroundings and the dramatic bare rock is part of what makes it compelling.

A story
These were once among the most powerful rapids in central Sweden. The Letnäsån river changed course thousands of years ago, leaving the carved channels completely dry. What remains is a geological record of the river's former power — smooth basins, deep gorges, and polished rock faces carved by water that has been gone since the last Ice Age.
