Degerfors

Small Värmland industrial town known for steelworks, football, and the ancient dry rapids at Sveafallen.

Degerfors sits on the Stockholm–Oslo road at the eastern edge of Värmland province. It is a small industrial town built on steel, though the mills have been declining for years. The football team, Degerfors IF, has been the more reliable source of local pride — a small-town club with a passionate following and a history of reaching the top division.

The reason to stop is Sveafallen just outside town — ancient rapids that dried up thousands of years ago, leaving behind a dramatic landscape of carved rock channels and steep gorges. The terrain is good for scrambling and rock climbing, and it is a striking geological curiosity even if you just walk through. Lake Möckeln to the north provides summer swimming and fishing.

Things to Do

Degerfors has two main reasons to stop: Sveafallen, the dramatic dried-up rapids outside town, and the local football club, Degerfors IF, one of the small-town success stories of Swedish football. Lake Möckeln to the north provides summer swimming and walks. It is a brief stop rather than a destination.
