Åmänningen Lake

Åmänningen is a long, narrow lake that straddles the municipalities of Fagersta and Surahammar, a few kilometres south of Engelsberg. It is part of the Norrström drainage system and the kind of still, forest-rimmed Swedish lake that invites slow exploration by kayak or canoe.

In summer the lake is popular for swimming and boating. The surrounding forest is typical Bergslagen — mixed conifer and birch, with the occasional abandoned mine shaft or ruined mill hinting at the industrial past that shaped this entire landscape. Bring a fishing rod or a kayak and take the pressure off the ironworks as your only reason to linger.
