Rö Runestone

The Rö Runestone stands in the parish of Rö, a few kilometres south of Grebbestad, and is one of the oldest inscribed runestones in Sweden. It dates from the Migration Period — roughly the 4th or 5th century CE — predating the Viking Age by several centuries, and the runic inscription it carries is in an archaic form of Proto-Norse.

The stone stands in a field, freely accessible. It is not spectacular to look at — a modest standing stone with weathered carvings — but its age and the continuity it represents, standing in the same landscape where it was placed 1,500 years ago, give it a particular quality. The combination with the Greby grave field a few kilometres away makes the area around Grebbestad one of the more concentrated patches of prehistoric heritage on the Swedish coast.

A story
The Rö Runestone is one of Sweden's oldest runestones, dated to approximately the 4th or 5th century CE — making it pre-Viking, from the Migration Period, when the runic alphabet was still in relatively early use in Scandinavia. The inscription uses an older form of runic script and has been interpreted as commemorating a chieftain or warrior of considerable local standing. Its survival over 1,500 years in the open Bohuslan landscape is remarkable.
