Grebbestad

Bohuslän fishing village among granite inlets, famous for cold-water oysters and summer seafood life.

Grebbestad is a small fishing village on the northern Bohuslan coast of Sweden, picturesquely set among smooth granite cliffs and sheltered inlets. It has about 1,300 year-round residents, but in summer the population swells as Swedes flock here for the coast.

The village is famous for its oysters — the cold, clean waters of the Skagerrak produce some of Sweden's best, and you can join guided oyster safaris to harvest and taste them straight from the sea. Beyond the oysters, there is excellent sea kayaking among the skerries, good swimming from the rocks, and a handful of seafood restaurants that are reason enough to visit.

Eating Out

Grebbestad's restaurant scene is small but punches above its weight for seafood. The village is famous for its oysters, and most restaurants make the most of them. The harbour area has a handful of good options, busiest in summer when reservations are advisable.

Getting There

Grebbestad is about 120 km north of Gothenburg on the Bohuslan coast. By car, take the E6 motorway north to Tanumshede and then follow smaller roads west to the coast — the drive takes about 90 minutes from the city. There is no direct public transport; the nearest train station is at Tanumshede, about 10 km away, with connections to Gothenburg and Oslo. From Tanumshede, taxis or local buses cover the final stretch in summer.
