Greby Grave Field

The Greby grave field, a short walk from the village, is one of the best-preserved Iron Age cemeteries in Bohuslan. More than two hundred stone monuments cover a rocky hillside above the coast — standing stones, cairns arranged in the outline of boats, and cist graves marked with upright slabs. The setting above the sea, with views out to the skerries, makes it easy to understand why Iron Age people chose this place.

The grave field is freely accessible and well-signed, with a gravel path among the monuments. It takes about an hour to walk through at a leisurely pace. The context is enriched by the Bronze and Iron Age rock carvings found throughout the Tanum area — the Tanum UNESCO World Heritage Site is about 20 km further north.

A story
The Greby grave field contains over 200 stone monuments dating from the Iron Age, roughly 400 BCE to 600 CE. What makes it particularly striking is the variety of monument types — round cairns, standing stones, stone ships, and cist graves — which suggests the site was used continuously over many centuries by people with different funerary customs, all choosing the same hilltop overlooking the sea.
