Laestadius Museum

Museum in the preserved parsonage of the revivalist preacher Lars Levi Laestadius

Lars Levi Laestadius was more than a preacher — he was also a serious botanist who corresponded with Charles Darwin and discovered several species of plants that bear his name. The museum in his preserved parsonage covers both sides of the man: the scientist and the revivalist, the naturalist and the firebrand.

The parsonage itself is the main exhibit. Laestadius lived and worked here for decades, raising a large family, writing his sermons and his botanical papers at the same desk. The modest rooms give a genuine sense of life in the Arctic far north in the mid-19th century. The museum is small — an hour is enough — but worth it if the Laestadius story interests you.
