Mariestad's harbour is where the town opens to Lake Vänern, northern Europe's largest lake. In summer it is the natural place for a walk, an ice cream, a swim nearby, or simply watching boats move between the guest harbour and the river mouth.
The wider lake landscape is more ambitious than the little harbour suggests: islands, beaches, reserves, and Djurö National Park sit offshore. Even if you stay in town, the water is what gives Mariestad its shape.
