Mariestad is a small Swedish lake town where the old centre, cathedral, and harbour sit close enough together to make an easy, satisfying day. The town stands where the Tidan river meets Lake Vänern, and its best views mix red roofs, water, and the cathedral tower above the old quarter.
The core reason to come is the old town around Mariestad Cathedral. Much of it was built in the 18th and 19th centuries, with cobbled streets, wooden houses, and small yards that still feel lived in rather than staged. On Marieholm island, Vadsbo Museum adds the local-history layer inside the former governor's residence.
Mariestad is also a good soft landing for Lake Vänern. You can swim, walk the harbour, or use the town as a base for the nearby archipelago and Djurö National Park. It is not a dramatic city, but it has enough old-town charm and lake country to justify a slow day.
