Småland has no single gateway, as it covers a large area of southern Sweden. The main cities are Växjö and Kalmar, both served by regional airports with connections to Stockholm Arlanda and a few other Swedish cities. Kalmar Airport also has summer charter services. The train network connects the region well: Kalmar is around two and a half hours from Malmö and has direct services north toward Stockholm via Linköping. Växjö sits on the main line between Malmö and Gothenburg, making it easy to reach from either direction.
For the Glasriket area specifically, a car is almost essential — the glassworks villages are spread across forest roads between Växjö and Kalmar, and public transport connections between them are sparse. Car hire is available at both airports and at the main train stations. The E4 motorway runs along the coast through Kalmar, while the more scenic inland roads through the glass country are well maintained and lightly trafficked.
Älmhult, the IKEA Museum town, is directly on the Malmö–Gothenburg main line and is easily reached without a car. Vimmerby is served by bus connections from Linköping and Kalmar, though having a car makes exploring the wider area around Astrid Lindgren's country considerably easier.
