Frösö Zoo

Frösö Zoo (Frösö Djurpark) on the island of Frösön is Sweden's northernmost zoo and focuses on the animals of the northern regions — a specialisation that makes it more interesting than a generic zoo, since the animals are largely suited to the climate and the landscape matches their natural habitat. The collection includes Scandinavian wolf, lynx, wolverine, arctic fox, and moose, along with Eurasian brown bear, Siberian tigers, and snow leopards.

The zoo is designed around large, naturalistic enclosures rather than the cramped cages of older-generation zoos, and many of the animals are genuinely active and visible rather than sleeping in corners. The moose enclosure is particularly good — Scandinavian moose (alces alces) are bigger and more impressive than their North American relatives, and seeing one close up resets your sense of scale. The zoo is a popular family destination in summer, busy on weekends but manageable during the week. It's easily combined with the Frösön runestone and a cycle around the island.
