Gamla Stan

Stockholm's medieval old town is one of Europe's best-preserved historic centers, a tight maze of cobblestone alleys and ochre-painted buildings dating back to the 13th century. The main square, Stortorget, is postcard-perfect with its colorful gabled facades and was once the site of the 1520 Stockholm Bloodbath. The Royal Palace dominates the island's eastern edge with its 600-plus rooms and daily changing of the guard. The Nobel Museum on Stortorget covers the history of the prize and its laureates. Wander off the main tourist drag of Västerlånggatan and you'll find quieter lanes barely a meter wide, hidden courtyards, and tiny antique shops. Mårten Trotzigs Gränd, the narrowest alley in the city at just 90 centimeters, is worth seeking out. Come early morning or late evening to avoid the cruise ship crowds.
