A 17th-century royal palace set in parkland on the shore of Edsviken, just north of central Stockholm. The building went through several incarnations — baroque origins, a grand redesign under Queen Kristina, near-ruin, then careful restoration in the 19th century.
The main draw is the Orangery, which holds a collection of Swedish sculpture spanning several centuries. The palace chapel, remodelled in the 1860s, is still used for concerts. The surrounding gardens mix formal French-style beds near the palace with wilder English-style parkland further out, and the waterfront setting is peaceful.
Easiest to reach by car, but you can also take the commuter train to Ulriksdal station and walk through the park.
