Barsta Fishing Chapel

A small wooden fisherman's chapel in the hamlet of Barsta on the coast south-east of Nordingrå, built in 1652 and largely unaltered since. The interior — painted by Roland Johansson Öberg in the 1730s — is an astonishing piece of folk baroque, walls and ceilings covered with biblical scenes in warm reds and ochres.

The chapel is one of several preserved fishing chapels along the High Coast, built so the seasonal fishermen had somewhere to worship when they were far from their home parishes. It is open in summer; the rest of the year, ask at the nearest farm for the key.
