Högbonden Lighthouse

Högbonden is a small, treeless island of round granite about an hour's boat ride out from the coast at Bönhamn, crowned by a 1909 stone lighthouse that is one of the iconic images of the High Coast. The walk up from the jetty is steep — twenty minutes of stone steps — but the views from the top, north along the cliff line and south over the open sea, are unmatched.

The lighthouse is now an STF hostel with about twenty bunks. Day visits are possible if you don't fancy the night, but staying over and walking the island in the late evening light is the experience. Book the boat and the bunks well ahead in summer.

A story
The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1968 and the keeper's quarters turned into an STF youth hostel; you can sleep on the bare granite top of the island under the midnight sun, with no road, no shop, and only a wood-fired sauna for company.
