Svartån River Walk

The Svartån (the Black River) flows through the middle of Västerås before emptying into Lake Mälaren, and the riverside path makes for a pleasant walk through the city. The stretch from the castle down to the lake passes old mill buildings, gardens, and the backs of historic houses — a different perspective on the city than the main streets give.

The path is well-maintained and flat, popular with cyclists and joggers as well as walkers. In winter the river can freeze partially, and the bare trees along the banks take on a different character. At the southern end, where the river meets the lake, the view opens up across the water to the islands beyond.
