Engstligen Falls

Switzerland's second-highest waterfall, a double cascade dropping 600m

The Engstligen Falls are the best reason to visit Adelboden in summer. The waterfall drops 600 metres off the edge of the Engstligenalp plateau in two parallel streams — impressive in early summer when snowmelt swells the flow, and still impressive in late summer when the water has dropped but the drop gains in clarity. The base of the falls is about a 45-minute walk from Adelboden village along a well-maintained path through the gorge.

From the base, a cable car ascends to the Engstligenalp plateau — a broad, flat alpine meadow at around 1,900 metres, an unusual landscape for Switzerland's steep terrain. In summer the plateau is excellent for easy walking, wildflower spotting, and views across to the Wildstrubel and Lohner massifs. A good day combines the walk up the gorge, the cable car to the plateau, a walk along the plateau, and lunch at the mountain restaurant before descending. The falls are at their most powerful in May and June.

A story
The Engstligen Falls drop off the edge of the Engstligenalp plateau in two parallel cascades — the larger dropping around 600 metres in total. The plateau above, at around 1,900 metres, was used as a military airfield during World War II, the aircraft landing on the flat alpine meadow and taking off over the falls' edge. The area is now a protected nature reserve.
