The Gemsstock is Andermatt's ski mountain — a steep, north-facing massif rising to nearly 3000 metres that holds snow reliably into spring. The ski terrain is challenging by Swiss standards: long top-to-bottom runs, genuine off-piste opportunity in the high basin, and a vertical drop of over 1000 metres from the summit to the village. It is not a mountain for beginners.
In summer, the Gemsstock cable car still runs to the summit, where the views across the Gotthard massif are exceptional. The ridge walk along the top is one of the finest easily accessible alpine walks in Uri, with chamois grazing on the rocks below and glaciers visible in all directions. The summit restaurant is good.
