A cluster of animated metal sculptures in the square behind the Theater Basel, created by Jean Tinguely in 1977. The machines spray water in unpredictable directions, spin, bob, and generally behave as though they have their own agendas. It is the most-photographed public artwork in Basel and one of the most joyful public fountains in Europe.
It is free to watch and runs during most of the year. On a warm afternoon you will find children daring each other to stand near the jets without getting soaked. The square itself is a good place to sit — there are cafes on the surrounding streets and the whole setup has the feel of somewhere that takes playfulness seriously.
