Rose Garden (Rosengarten)

The Rosengarten sits on a terrace above the Bear Park, looking west across the Aare to the Old Town peninsula. The garden has around 200 varieties of rose and 200 varieties of iris, blooming from May to October. But the roses are almost secondary to the view: the panorama of the Old Town with the Minster tower rising above the cluster of sandstone rooflines is one of the classic Bern perspectives.

The garden is free to enter and open all year. The attached restaurant and café serves Swiss food and has an outdoor terrace with the same view — a reliable spot for lunch after a morning in the Old Town. The walk from the Bear Park takes about ten minutes uphill, or you can approach from the Aargauerstalden path along the riverbank.
