Bern

Swiss federal capital with arcaded medieval streets curled inside a bend of the Aare.

Switzerland’s federal capital (pop. 136,000) is one of the best-preserved medieval city centres in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A fire destroyed most of it in 1405, and what was rebuilt in the following century is still largely intact: 6 kilometres of continuous arcaded sandstone walkways, eleven painted medieval fountains, and the 100-metre tower of the Bern Minster rising from the heart of the peninsula. The Zytglogge clock tower — with its mechanical figure show at four minutes before each hour — is the symbolic centre of the city and a pivot in Albert Einstein’s thought experiments about time.

Bern is the kind of capital that does not shout. There is no equivalent of Paris’s grands axes or London’s monuments. The city’s emblem is a bear, the bears live in an open riverside park, and the Bundeshaus — seat of Swiss democracy — lets you inside for free on non-sitting days. The Old Town neighbourhood rewards several hours of unhurried walking: the arcades shelter you from weather, the medieval streets are steep and full of character, and the terraces above the Aare offer views that reward the effort to reach them.

The city has a strong museum strip on Helvetiaplatz, just south of the Old Town: the Bern Historical Museum with its Burgundian tapestries and Einstein exhibit, the Natural History Museum with its famous taxidermied Saint Bernard, and the Museum of Communication. The Kunstmuseum is north of the station; the Zentrum Paul Klee, holding the world’s largest Klee collection in a Renzo Piano building, is 3 km east of the centre. The Einstein Haus on Kramgasse is where the physicist lived when he developed special relativity while working as a patent clerk.

In summer, Bern’s residents swim in the Aare. The river is fast and cold but clean, and floating from the Marzili baths downstream is as quintessential a Bern experience as visiting the Minster. On clear days, take the funicular to the Gurten for a panorama of the Bernese Alps, from the Eiger to the Niesen.

Local tip

Bern, not Zurich or Geneva, is Switzerland's capital — a perfectly preserved medieval old town wrapped in a loop of the Aare river, a UNESCO site. In summer locals float down the fast, cold Aare and climb out at the riverside lawns. See the medieval clock tower (Zytglogge) and the bear pit. Einstein dreamed up relativity while living here.
