The Zentrum Paul Klee holds the world's largest collection of works by the Swiss-German painter Paul Klee, comprising around 4,000 works. The museum building was designed by Renzo Piano as three undulating hills of steel and glass set into an orchard landscape on the eastern edge of the city. The permanent collection rotates through temporary exhibitions, and the attached Kindermuseum Creaviva offers hands-on art activities for children.
Klee was born near Bern and the city takes his legacy seriously. The collection spans his entire career, from early sketches to the late works produced when scleroderma was progressively robbing him of motor control. About 40% of his 9,000-work output is here. The museum is about 3 km east of the Old Town, best reached by bus or bicycle.
