Biel-Magglingen Funicular

The Biel-Magglingen Funicular climbs from the western edge of Biel up to the Jura plateau at Magglingen, rising about 300 metres in a journey of a few minutes. At the top, the Jura plateau opens out into walking country above the city — pastures, forest tracks, and views back down to Lake Biel and, in clear weather, the Bernese Alps. Magglingen village is small but has a couple of restaurants and connects to the trail network across the Jura.

The funicular itself is a standard Swiss cable-car operation — reliable, comfortable, and frequent. A second funicular, the Bienne-Evilard, climbs the hill on the eastern side of town to the residential suburb of Evilard/Leubringen, which has more restaurants and slightly different views. Both funiculars use the standard Swiss transit pass and are covered by regional travel passes.

A story
Magglingen (Macolin in French) is home to the Swiss Federal Sports Centre, established on the Jura plateau above Biel in 1944 — a sprawling complex of sports facilities, research institutes, and training centres used by Swiss Olympic teams. The plateau's elevation and climate make it ideal for altitude training, and the funicular up from Biel was built specifically to serve this institution as well as the leisure traffic from the city below.
