Engelberg Abbey is the village's historical centre, founded in the 12th century and still an active Benedictine monastery. The church, school and cloister buildings give Engelberg a deeper identity than a ski resort normally has.
It is worth pairing the abbey with the small cheese factory in the same complex, where you can watch cheese being made and pick up something for a picnic before heading into the mountains.
