Engelberg sits at the end of a valley south of Lucerne, ringed by big Central Swiss mountains and watched over by its Benedictine abbey. The name means "mountain of angels", which sounds fanciful until the cloud lifts and the cliffs above the village suddenly appear.
The resort works in both seasons. Winter is about the Titlis ski area, with high-altitude snow and serious terrain around the glacier. Summer brings hikers, mountain bikers and day-trippers riding the cable cars up to Trubsee and Titlis for views across the Alps. The village itself stays small and walkable, with the abbey, cheese dairy and valley museum close to the centre.
Engelberg is easy to reach by train from Lucerne, so it can be a day trip. It is better with a night or two: mornings are quieter, the valley buses and lifts make the surrounding slopes simple to explore, and the place feels more like a mountain village once the day visitors have gone.
