Il Spir is a wooden viewing platform cantilevered over the edge of the cliff above the Rhine Gorge, about a 40-minute walk from Flims through the forest. The view straight down into the Ruinaulta gorge is one of the best in the Alps — the river glints far below, white rock pinnacles rise from the canyon floor, and on a clear day the view extends to the Vorderrhein valley beyond.
The walk there and back through the spruce forest is part of the appeal. Take the trail from Conn, a small hamlet just below Flims. The platform is free to use and open year-round (though the path can be icy in winter). A good half-day excursion combined with a swim at the Caumasee.
