Gerzensee Lake

The Gerzensee is a small, clean lake right at the edge of the village. In summer it is popular for swimming — the water is calm, clear, and swimmable from late June through August. There is a lakeside bathing area with a simple beach and some grass for picnicking.

The lake sits at the foot of the Belpberg hill, giving the swimming spot a pleasant setting with views south across the plateau towards the Bernese Alps. On clear days the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau are visible on the horizon, making this one of the more scenic village swimming spots in the canton of Bern.

A story
The Gerzensee is one of a string of small lakes on the Swiss Mittelland plateau formed by glacial retreat after the last ice age. A Bronze Age pile-dwelling settlement was found on its shores, placing human habitation here over 3,000 years ago — part of a UNESCO-recognised cluster of prehistoric lake dwellings across the Alps.
