Gerzensee

Bernese plateau village by Gerzensee lake, with Alpine views from the foot of Belpberg

Gerzensee is a small village at the foot of the Belpberg hill, set between the Aaretal and the Gürbetal valleys in the canton of Bern. The village sits at the edge of the Mittelland — the Swiss plateau — with views south towards the Alps and north towards the Emmental hills.

The Gerzensee lake beside the village is popular for swimming in summer; on clear days you can look south across the plateau to the Eiger and Jungfrau from the water. The area is good cycling and walking country. The main institution in the village is the Stiftung Gerzensee, an economic research and education centre of the Swiss National Bank, which occupies the old castle grounds. Gerzensee is a short train ride from Bern on the S6 line.

Getting There

Gerzensee is on the Bern–Thun suburban rail line (S-Bahn line S6). Trains from Bern take around 20 minutes and run frequently throughout the day. The station is at the edge of the village, a short walk from the lake.

By car, Gerzensee is about 20 kilometres southeast of Bern centre, reached via the A6 motorway towards Thun or via smaller cantonal roads through the Gürbetal. Parking in the village is limited but generally not a problem outside summer weekends.

Things to Do

Gerzensee is a village for slowing down — swimming in the lake, cycling the surrounding plateau, walking in the hills above the Aaretal. The Stiftung Gerzensee castle grounds are worth seeing for anyone interested in Swiss institutional architecture. Otherwise, the appeal is simple: good landscape, clean air, and easy proximity to Bern.
