Mürren

Mürren is the less-visited of the two main villages above Lauterbrunnen, perched on the western valley wall at 1,638 metres. Car-free and accessible only by cable car from Grütschalp and then a narrow-gauge railway, it has a more local, less polished character than Wengen. The views from Mürren are arguably better — you look directly at the full north faces of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, which rise dramatically across the valley.

The cable car up to the Schilthorn (2,970 m) departs from Mürren, offering access to the James Bond revolving restaurant Piz Gloria and 360-degree Alpine views. The ski area above Mürren is smaller than Wengen's but quieter. In summer, the hiking is magnificent: the walk from Mürren along the valley rim to Gimmelwald and Stechelberg is one of the classic routes in the Bernese Oberland.

A story
The Inferno Race, held at Mürren each January, is the world's longest and largest amateur ski race: 15.8 km from the Schilthorn summit to the valley floor, with up to 1,800 participants. It began in 1928 when a group of British skiers, inspired by Arnold Lunn, decided to race straight down the mountain. The record time is under 15 minutes.
