Jungfraujoch — Top of Europe

The Jungfraujoch at 3,463 metres is the highest railway station in Europe, and the train ride up from Lauterbrunnen (via Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg) is part of the attraction. The journey through the heart of the Eiger, with stops at windows cut through the cliff face, is genuinely extraordinary. At the top, the Aletsch Glacier — the longest glacier in the Alps — stretches away to the south, and on clear days the views extend as far as the Black Forest.

The "Top of Europe" complex includes restaurants, exhibitions, and the Sphinx Observatory at 3,572 metres with its panoramic viewing platform. You can walk on the glacier along a roped and secured route. The cold is real (bring proper layers even in summer) and the altitude affects some visitors. Book train tickets in advance; they are expensive but the experience justifies it on a clear day.

A story
The train to the Jungfraujoch burrows through the Eiger and the Mönch before emerging at the highest railway station in Europe. Construction took 16 years (1896–1912) and claimed the lives of around 30 workers. During the building, a window was cut through the Eiger's north face — the Eigerwand station — purely to remove spoil from the tunnel. Today it's a viewing window, and you can see out through the very face that defeated so many climbers.
