Savognin Ski Area

Savognin's ski area covers around 80 kilometres of marked runs, almost all of them between 1,200 and 2,713 metres altitude. The terrain is predominantly red (intermediate) and blue (easy), with some black runs on the steeper upper sections. The snow record is decent — the village sits at 1,200 metres and the upper slopes reach above 2,700 — and lift queues are rarely a problem outside of school holidays.

The main access point is a gondola from the village, followed by a network of chairlifts and drag lifts. The area suits intermediate skiers well and is genuinely family-friendly. It has none of the glitz of the Engadin resorts to the south, which is either a selling point or a drawback depending on what you are looking for.

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails follow the valley floor and the forests around the village. Rental equipment is available in town.

A story
Savognin has been trying to merge with the larger Lenzerheide ski area for years, with a planned connection via a high-altitude gondola that would create one of the larger ski domains in Graubünden. The project has faced repeated legal challenges from environmentalists. Whether it is ever built, the plan has kept Savognin's name in ski industry conversations it might not otherwise enter.
