Simme River Walk

The riverside path along the Simme runs through the full length of the valley, connecting Lenk to Wimmis near Spiez. The full route is about 50 kilometres and typically walked over two days, though any individual section can be done as a day walk. The path is well-marked and largely flat, following the river bank closely and passing through every significant village.

The most attractive section is between Erlenbach and Zweisimmen, where the valley is wide enough for the river to meander and the farmland on either bank is open. The stretch between Boltigen and Weissenburg passes through a narrow gorge section — the Simmenfluh — where the river cuts through a limestone ridge and the path briefly climbs above the water.

The route is equally good for cycling; the valley-floor gradient is gentle enough that the whole length can be ridden in a single day on a standard bike. The path uses no major roads and the surface is a mix of gravel and asphalt. Most trailheads have bike racks.

A story
The Simme rises near the Rawil pass above Lenk and runs 66 kilometres north to join the Kander at Wimmis. For most of its length it is a fast, clear river running through a narrow valley floor, with little flat ground on either side. The riverside path was formalised as a walking route in the early 2000s as part of Swiss national trail improvements.
