Thunerseespiele

Every summer, a floating stage is assembled on Lake Thun for the Thunerseespiele — open-air musical theatre performed on the water with the mountains as a backdrop. The stage floats just offshore from the lakeside venue south of the old town, and on clear evenings the combination of music, water, and the Bernese Alps makes for a memorable experience.

Productions are large-scale musicals and popular operas performed in German: past shows have included West Side Story, Grease, and Mozart operas. Tickets sell out well in advance, especially for peak summer weekends. Even if you are not attending a show, the floating stage is visible from the lakeside path during the construction and run periods.

A story
The Thunerseespiele began in 1984 as a small outdoor theatre and grew into one of Switzerland's largest open-air musical productions. The floating stage is anchored 25 metres off the lakeshore and seats up to 2,500 people. In poor weather, the shows go on — the audience watches under a roof canopy while the stage floats in the rain. The productions are large-scale musicals and operas, performed in German, typically running from July to September.
