Arbon

A small lakeside town on the southern shore of Lake Constance, with a partly preserved medieval old town tucked between the harbour and the castle hill. The 16th-century Schloss Arbon, on Roman foundations, has been restored and houses a small historical museum focused on the Roman, early medieval, and industrial periods of the town's history.

Arbon's industrial heritage runs deep — the Saurer truck and embroidery machine works once employed most of the town — and the renovated Saurer-WerkZwei waterfront is now a mixed arts and retail district worth a walk. The lakeside promenade extends 5 km west to the next town, Egnach, and is one of the easier sections of the Bodensee-Radweg.

A story
Arbon was the Roman castrum of Arbor Felix on the road from Bregenz to Constance, and the Roman watchtower preserved in the basement of the present castle is one of the oldest standing structures in Switzerland. The town's name is a direct descendant — Arbor Felix → Arbore → Arbon — meaning 'happy tree', though no one has ever quite worked out which tree.
