Frauenfeld

Thurgau's quiet cantonal capital sits on the Murg River, between the lake and the forested hills of the Bichelseegebiet. The old town is a single long line of houses below the medieval castle, mostly 16th- and 17th-century with painted façades and stone signs, and a Saturday market on the Marktgasse that draws growers from across the canton.

Schloss Frauenfeld at the upper end of town is a heavily restored 13th-century keep, now home to the cantonal history museum (small and well-curated, with a particularly good section on the witch trials of the early modern period). Add a short walk along the river and a coffee at one of the gasthof terraces and you have a satisfying half-day.
