Maison d'Ailleurs

Museum of science fiction, utopia, and extraordinary journeys — the only one of its kind in Europe

The "House of Elsewhere" occupies a former prison just behind the castle and is one of the most unexpected museums in Switzerland. Inside is a deep collection of science fiction, utopian writing, and what the French call "voyages extraordinaires" — Jules Verne first editions, pulp magazines, film props, original artwork from Métal Hurlant illustrators, board games, robots, and a permanent collection that includes material from the Space Odyssey film set.

Temporary exhibitions are often more interesting than the permanent display. They tend to focus on a single author, theme, or sub-genre — past shows have covered post-apocalyptic landscapes, the work of Philip K. Dick, and the visual language of comic book mecha. The museum also runs the adjoining Espace Jules Verne, a smaller annex with rotating exhibits, and produces academic research on speculative fiction.

A story
The museum was founded in 1976 by Pierre Versins, a Holocaust survivor who became one of the world's leading collectors of speculative fiction. When he donated his collection of 30,000 books, magazines, and objects to the town of Yverdon, the council had no idea what to do with it. They eventually housed it in a converted prison.
