Getting Around

Within Zermatt village, everything is on foot — the car-free centre is compact and manageable. Electric taxis operate for luggage and those with mobility issues.

The mountain transport system is comprehensive: the Gornergrat Railway, three cable car networks (Sunnegga/Rothorn, Schwarzsee/Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, and the connection to Cervinia), and numerous chairlifts. In summer, the cable cars and Gornergrat Railway operate reduced schedules. A single multi-day lift pass covers most of the mountain transport.

For hiking, everything above the village is accessed on foot once you reach the upper terminals. The Swiss Alpine Club hut system provides overnight accommodation for multi-day routes. The Zermatt tourist office provides free hiking maps.
