Sunnegga Paradise

Sunnegga Paradise is the first station on the Rothorn cable car network, reached in four minutes by an underground funicular that departs from the east side of Zermatt village. At 2,288 metres, it sits above the tree line and above the morning cloud that often fills the valley, giving reliable sunshine and views of the Matterhorn from a sun terrace with a restaurant.

The Five Lakes Walk starts from Sunnegga — the path descends through the five alpine lakes back to Zermatt over three to four hours. The children's playground at the lake near the station (Leisee) is one of the best in the mountains. In winter, Sunnegga is the access point for the Rothorn ski area, which has some of the most varied terrain above Zermatt. The funicular runs frequently year-round and is one of the quickest ways to gain altitude from the village.

A story
The Sunnegga funicular descends underground from the village to a station carved into the rock, then climbs through the mountain to emerge at 2,288 metres on the other side — a journey of about four minutes. The underground section passes through an aquifer, and the funicular tunnel was dug through solid bedrock. On arrival, you step out onto the sunny terrace above the clouds that often sit over Zermatt, with the Matterhorn suddenly visible where it was hidden below.
