Nevytske Castle (Day Trip)

Nevytske Castle stands on a basalt volcanic rock about 12 kilometres north of Uzhhorod, overlooking the Uzh River valley and the Carpathian foothills beyond. It was built in the 13th century and expanded over the following three centuries; by the 17th century it had been abandoned and allowed to decay. The three remaining towers, the fragments of curtain wall, and the unruly vegetation make it one of the most atmospheric ruins in western Ukraine.

The site is easily reached by bus or taxi from Uzhhorod (about 30 minutes). There is no admission charge. The climb from the road to the castle takes about 15 minutes on a rough path. Views from the towers extend over the Uzh valley and, on clear days, well into Slovakia.

A story
Nevytske Castle was abandoned in the 17th century and has been slowly returning to the hillside ever since — three towers survive to varying heights, and the outer walls are draped in forest. Goats graze in the courtyard. It is the kind of ruin that doesn't need a museum to be compelling.
