When to Go

Spring is the finest season in Uzhhorod. The cherry blossoms (sakura) on the embankment — thousands of trees planted along Kapitulna Street and along the Uzh — bloom in late March or early April, drawing visitors from across Ukraine and even from Slovakia and Hungary. It is a genuine spectacle, lasting about ten days, and the city fills with photographers and families for it.

Summer (June to August) is warm, the lindens are in bloom in June, and the Carpathian hiking is in good condition. The Bograch Festival in September is the main autumn event — teams compete to make the best version of the paprika soup in enormous cauldrons, with live music and plenty to drink.

Winter is quiet and can be cold (temperatures occasionally drop below -10°C) but the city looks handsome in snow, and the Philharmonic's concert season runs through the winter months. Travel advisories for Ukraine should be checked before any trip; the situation since the 2022 invasion has made Uzhhorod safer than most of the country but the region is not risk-free.
