St. Lawrence's Church is the finest architectural monument in Zhovkva — an Italian Mannerist structure built between 1606 and 1618 that served as the mausoleum for the Żółkiewski, Daniłowicz, and Sobieski dynasties. It stands on a raised terrace and presents an elegant Renaissance facade that feels out of place in a small Ukrainian town, which is exactly the point: this was a prestige project by one of Poland's most powerful military families.
The hexagonal bell tower leans slightly to the east, which gives the complex an additional quirky character. Inside the church are the family vaults of these great Polish dynasties — including the father of King Jan III Sobieski — making it something of a shrine to the golden age of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Restoration work, sponsored by Warsaw University of Technology and the Polish military, is ongoing; the church remains an active Roman Catholic parish.
