78 Derngate

78 Derngate is the only house outside Scotland designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The small Northampton townhouse has been carefully restored as a museum, with interiors that show Mackintosh's late, sharp-edged decorative style in a domestic setting.

Guided tours are the best way to see the detail: furniture, colour, stencilling, and room layouts all matter here. It is a compact but distinctive stop for anyone interested in British design and early 20th-century architecture.
