Things to Do

Northampton's most remarkable building is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, one of only four round churches in England, built by a Crusader knight around 1100. St Peter's Church on Marefair is another exceptional piece of Norman architecture, largely unchanged since the 12th century. All Saints' Church, rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1675, has an elegant Baroque interior and a portico bearing a statue of Charles II.

The Northampton Museum and Art Gallery on Guildhall Road holds one of the world's largest shoe collections — over 12,000 pairs — reflecting the town's centuries-long connection to the leather trade. The Victorian Gothic Guildhall on St Giles' Square is worth a look for its elaborate carved façade. Almost nothing remains of Northampton Castle, demolished in 1879 for the railway, though the site near the station includes a surviving gateway and interpretation of its significance — Thomas Becket stood trial here in 1164.
