Stretham Old Engine is a rare survivor from the long battle to drain and manage the Fens. The brick engine house and pumping machinery show how much human effort went into turning wetland into farmland and keeping the flat landscape habitable.
It is a niche industrial-history stop, but a good one if you are exploring around Ely. The engine gives context to the wide, low countryside: without pumps, drains, and constant maintenance, this region would look very different.
