Framlingham Castle is one of the great surviving castles of East Anglia. Instead of a central keep, it has a dramatic curtain wall with thirteen towers, giving you a full circuit above the town and the mere.
The site is tied to the Bigod, Mowbray, and Howard families, and to Mary Tudor, who gathered support here before becoming queen in 1553. The wall walk is the reason to pay the entry fee: the castle reads best from above, with the town pressed close on one side and open Suffolk on the other.
