Framlingham is a small Suffolk market town that has one outstanding reason to visit: Framlingham Castle, a huge ring of flint walls and towers rising above the town and its mere.
The castle gives the place its shape. Walk the wall, look down over the red roofs and water meadows, then cross to St Michael's Church, one of Suffolk's grand wool churches and the burial place of powerful Howard dukes.
Framlingham is not a busy sightseeing town, and that is part of the pleasure. Market Hill still feels like a working East Anglian town centre, while Saxtead Green Post Mill gives you a good rural add-on a couple of miles away.
This is a clear spare-day trip if you are already in Suffolk. It would be thin without the castle, but with the castle, church, mere, and market-town setting, Framlingham clears the bar.
