Flag Fen

Flag Fen is Peterborough's great prehistoric sight, east of the modern city in the flat fenland. The site preserves a Bronze Age timber causeway and platform, waterlogged for millennia and recovered from the peat with enough detail to make the ancient landscape feel startlingly close.

It is not a polished theme-park attraction; it is better than that. The value is in understanding how people lived with the wetland, built across it, and placed objects into it. Combine it with the museum in town if you want Peterborough's story before the cathedral.

A story
Flag Fen preserves part of a Bronze Age timber causeway built across wet fenland about 3,500 years ago. The scale is startling: tens of thousands of posts were driven into the marsh, a communal effort that makes the site feel less like a curiosity and more like a prehistoric engineering project.
