Six Hills

The Six Hills are a group of Roman burial mounds on Six Hills Common, close to the line of the old Great North Road. They are low, grassy, and easy to underrate, but they are among the most distinctive ancient remains in Stevenage.

Their setting is part of the interest. Modern roads and new-town planning press in around them, yet the barrows keep a much older geography visible. Stop here if you want a quick reminder that Stevenage's story did not begin in 1946.

A story
The Six Hills are Roman barrows beside the old Great North Road, a route that later carried stagecoaches and then modern traffic. Their survival inside a post-war new town is oddly satisfying: Stevenage's oldest landmark is not in a museum, but sitting beside the road system that helped define the modern place.
